The Criminal Justice Administration (CJA) degree program is designed to introduce and develop/enhance the management and leadership skills and methods that are needed to make the modem criminal justice organization as efficient and effective as possible. A variety of assignments and techniques, employing an active learning format, are used to promote critical thinking and direct application of course material.

Some examples of these assignments and techniques include:


Formal and informal presentation of case studies, ethical dilemmas, and other assignments that help students hone their oral and written communication skills, research skills, critical thinking skills, and teamwork skills.
Use of discussion groups, simulation, cooperative projects, case studies, field trips, modeling, and debate to reflect on the criminal justice organization manager/leaders' role in planning, organizing, controlling, and leading.
Use of a final capstone project to integrate all aspects of the degree program and apply that knowledge to a proposal to improve/enhance a process in the organization.

Students can expect to learn:


How the modem criminal justice system has developed from a variety of historical and contemporary societal inputs.
How to evaluate and improve their own management style by reflecting on their own personality characteristics, time/stress management, conflict resolution, team work, communication, and decision making approaches.
How to assess legal and ethical issues in the organization.
How to employ research skills and statistical analysis in the criminal justice field.
How to develop personnel and equipment acquisition procedures.
How manager/leaders can develop and use management information systems. to improve the information gathering in the criminal justice organization.
How to employ strategic planning and budgeting approaches in the criminal justice organization.
How to plan and prepare for tactical operations in criminal justice organizations.
How to develop and plan a community policing approach in contemporary society.
How to conduct an in-depth analysis of a current criminal justice issue and propose possible solutions.
