BCIT builds pathways for career success in the global marketplace. Teaching excellence, applied education and research provide the foundation for the polytechnic learning journey. As a polytechnic institution, BCIT supports extensive linkages with business and industry, conducts corporate and industry training and upgrading, and maintains dedicated resources for applied research and technology transfer activities.

In today's demanding work environments, skills upgrading is necessary to stay current and be competitive. Overall, 70% of BCIT distance education students register in courses to upgrade their skills and almost 90% take distance and distributed learning courses and degree programs to accomplish an educational objective (for example, an academic credential such as certificate, diploma, degree, or professional credential).

Quality standards of courses and degree programs are ensured by BCIT curriculum development standards and assignment of credits which are consistent with campus-based courses. BCIT distance and distributed learning courses, like all BCIT degree programs, are planned and developed with input from BCIT's advisory councils that include representatives from industry and employers. BCIT graduation is a mark of excellence that attracts employers.

Online courses provide for rich interaction between you and your instructor, or between you and other students. Online courses often have weekly scheduled learning activities or assignments in which you may work in collaborative groups or participate in discussion forums. You may contact your instructor on a relatively frequent basis with regards to assignments and other learning activities. Usually, expectations for frequency of communication with your instructor are established at the beginning of the course; for example, your instructor may respond to your e-mail and bulletin board postings within 48 hours. Online courses begin on the start date of the course; your password and login for the course may not work prior to the start date of the course.
