Questions and Answers
What do you see as the greatest challenges facing the education field today?
1
Of course there are multiple difficult challenges in the field of education today. However, no matter the discussion topic being discussed, whether it be private schools, charter schools, vouchers, etc., the conversation always returns to hiring quality teachers. And not only hiring quality teachers, but retaining them. The best teachers are the teachers that are most passionate in the field of education. Many of these teachers come from excellent teaching groups such as Teach for America. Teachers affiliated with this organization have proven themselves to be invaluable. They have been able to obtain results that are above and beyond those of the same classroom before the teacher was brought in. However, after the teacher's two years are up, the teachers usually move to a field that rewards them monetarily for their passions and abilities. If we were to keep the field of teaching as attractive as Teach for America does, talented individuals would be attracted to the field of education.

There are many challenges facing the field of education today. With continuous budget cuts forcing an increase in classroom sizes and further layoffs of teachers, it seems that there is no hope in sight (particularly for "new" teachers). Keeping your optimism when being laid off every year begins to take a toll on even the most dedicated of teachers, but all we can do is keep faith that in time, things will improve and we can focus on why we became educators in the first place: educating children.

What are your greatest challenges with using technology in the classroom?
1
I would like to take a few moments to talk about my greatest challenges with using technology in the classroom. I teach English to students in Haiti. I live in Illinois and at 3:00 my students gather in the front room of a donated home. The owners live there and they donate the space for me to hold class. Everyday, providing there is electricity, we get on Skype for at least an hour, sometimes closer to two hours. My students are so dedicated to learning English that they sit and WAIT for the electricity in the case it comes back on! My classes are free and I volunteer my time and have done so for 17 months five days a week. The hours we are together are a pure joy. We've tried various methods of connecting and it turns out Skype works the best for us. Here is the challenge; I need a method to share my screen while I can see the students and they can see me. We don't have a budget so we can't purchase a fancy program so until then, I'll go back and forth between sharing my screen and turning the camera back on. One-day technology will catch up with our needs.

The greatest challenge with using technology in the classroom is not having enough funding to maintain the computers. If there even are enough computers, the systems are old--and they are broken more often than not. Due to budget cuts, the district's technicians are spread extremely thin. Teachers are left with useless computers that take up valuable classroom space!
