Liberal Studies, Business Studies (B.A.)

The University’s program of liberal studies allows students to design a career-oriented liberal arts degree that reflects their personal and professional goals. Each student works closely with an advisor and the program director in structuring and completing a program that leads to a B.A. or B.S. in a specific concentration. Students can pursue a liberal studies degree in one of the established concentrations listed in this section or by designing an individualized concentration with the assistance and approval of the program director. Regardless of concentration you choose or design, the liberal studies curriculum has two primary components: one focused on the liberal arts and general education, and the other on career-specific studies. Liberal Arts Component The liberal arts component comprises 63 hours of general studies, liberal arts electives, and liberal studies courses. General Studies Complete 36 hours in the following areas with an overall average of C or better: Computer proficiency 3 English 6 Communication skills 3 Humanities and fine arts 6 Mathematics 3 Natural sciences 6 Social sciences 9 Total 36 Liberal Arts Electives Complete 18 semester hours, with an overall average of C or better, in areas commonly associated with the liberal arts. Elective areas include art, composition, humanities, literature, music, philosophy, speech, communication, criminal justice, economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, social work, sociology, astronomy, biology, chemistry, ecology, geology, mathematics, meteorology, physical science, physics, and statistics. Liberal Studies Courses Complete the following three liberal studies courses (for a total of 9 hours) with a minimum grade of C in each. Approval of the program director is a prerequisite for each course.
Senior-level courses: 9 to 12 hours of practica, senior projects, and senior-level directed studies that synthesize earlier learning. Enrollment in these courses requires the approval of the program director. Students pursuing more than one concentration must complete a separate practicum, senior project, or senior-level directed study for each concentration.
Established Concentrations The following established concentrations are currently available through the liberal studies pathway: Business Studies Concentration Leads to a B.A. degree. Designed for adults with business experience who wish to earn a bachelor’s degree, the business studies concentration provides both flexibility and breadth. A student-defined and selfdirected program of study, with the ongoing assistance of a faculty mentor/academic advisor, serves adult learners who already have professional business experience
