We're looking for people who really want to make a difference, who really want to help people. If that's you, a degree in Social Work opens the door for you to become a professional social worker in your community. What's Unique About Social Work at MSU?
Career Social work is a growth industry, especially in southern West Virginia, where there is a serious shortage of trained social workers. Since 1999, nearly all of our graduates are working in professional social work jobs or attending graduate school. Professional opportunities: mental health, substance abuse, children and youth, medical social work, criminal justice, domestic violence, counseling, child protective services. Our graduates are working in a variety of settings: hospitals, nursing homes, residential facilities for teens, mental health centers, corrections facilities, schools. Program Requirements The social work program prepares students with the professional knowledge, skills, and values needed for beginning generalist social work practice. Generalist practice is characterized by a wide array of skills to deal with basic conditions and is backed up by specialists to whom referrals can be made. There are no special application procedures for freshman applicants. Students may declare social work as a major during their freshman year. Initial coursework introduces the field of social work, its history, social work practice, and human behavior in the social environment. Application for formal entry into the social work program takes place during the spring semester of the sophomore year. Eligibility requirements for formal entry include:
