NCU knows that the need for well prepared educational leaders has never been greater. Today the Ed.D. has evolved to a terminal degree of choice for educational practitioners.

The NCU Ed.D. attracts Learners who have leadership responsibility for providing learning/training to others, whether they be in colleges, PK-12 schools, proprietary organizations, private and public businesses, or the military.

The NCU Ed.D. focuses on job-embedded and solution driven applications, providing Learners with the necessary tools and information to use research in their daily work. The diversity of the specialization offerings allows Learners the opportunity to focus on what is meaningful to their professional growth and development. The Ed.D. experience at NCU culminates in the work setting applied dissertation project.

Objectives:
The specific objectives of the Ed.D. program are to:

1. Promote the Learner’s advancement of knowledge based on research as it applies to the professional practice of, and leadership in, education.

2. Enable competent, committed educational leaders to pursue personal goals of leadership and advanced scholarship in relation to their areas of interest.

3. Prepare Learners, through the doctoral dissertation project experience to intellectually explore practical solutions for problems and challenges facing education today.

The Ed.D. Research and Dissertation:

Many individuals who pursue an Ed.D. are intimidated or overwhelmed at the thought of producing a dissertation. The School of Education has developed a logical step-by-step process that assists you in completing your Ed.D. dissertation. NCU provides you with a detailed Ed.D. Dissertation Handbook that explains the process and NCU's dissertation support structure. The Ed.D. doctoral research courses, the comprehensive course and the dissertation courses (8, 3-credit courses) are specifically designed to guide you through the process.

The dissertation is the capstone academic achievement of the Ed.D. The Ed.D. dissertation is applied, project based and results in a product designed to produce appreciable improvements in the Learner’s school or organization and must also impact the Learner’s leadership growth. Although applied and project based, the Ed.D. dissertation is a scholarly document. To earn the Ed.D. you must demonstrate the ability, drive, and determination; and NCU will provide the faculty mentors, the academic support and process to assist you to reach your high academic goal. No oral defense is required for the Ed.D.

Requirements:
Learners working toward the Ed.D. complete 81 semester credits of coursework beyond the bachelor's degree, or 51 semester credits (this includes the 24 credits of research, the comprehensive course and the dissertation) beyond the 30 transferred graduate credits with a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 (B) or higher.

Specializations:
The School of Education offers Learners the opportunity to pursue an area of specialization within a degree program. Learners who complete at least 18 semester credits in a specific specialization may elect to have the specialization recorded on their transcript and diploma. There is a great deal of flexibility for Learners as they accomplish fulfilling the number of credits needed for their degree. You can even CUSTOMIZE your learning plan!

NCU recognizes that each Learner is unique, and therefore evaluates each application based not only on what courses or program of study a Learner has accomplished previously, but takes into consideration which specialization they will be pursuing at NCU and their current and future professional goals. Academic Advisors review each Learner's transcripts and application detailing all program requirements, options and choices with the Learner.

All NCU Learners are required to take EDR7000- Educational Research Strategies.

The specialization in Instructional Leadership(IL) at NCU provides a solid foundation for Learners who want to improve the instructional capacity of schools and increase student achievement. Strong instructional leaders lead effective schools. Instructional leadership, not just by the principal but also by others in both formal and informal leadership roles play a pivotal role in leading instructional improvements and reform to enhance student learning and achievement.

Through the efforts of accomplished instructional leadership experts, the IL specialization focuses on preparing educational practitioners, and reflective decision makers through teaching and research. Ed.D. Learners who pursue the specialization in Instructional Leadership are prepared to teach in community, 4-year colleges, and universities in the areas of their expertise. Courses in the program are designed to provide the technical, human, and conceptual skills essential to theory and practice.
