Most teachers cannot afford to leave their jobs, their families, and their homes for extended courses of study. This has made graduate work difficult for many high school teachers as well as for many college instructors without the PhD. The Department of Classics at the University of Florida thus offers graduate level distance courses during the regular academic year (fall and spring). These courses, in conjunction with the department's long-standing two-week summer institutes in Latin, extend to teachers -- no matter where they reside -- workable paths to certification, re-certification, an M.A., and the Ph.D.
