About this school

Western Governors University

Online. Accelerated. Affordable. Accredited.

WGU is a different kind of college … because you’re busy. You want a degree, but you also need the time to earn it. Now more than ever, people need easy access to affordable, practical education that will give them skills and knowledge they can take directly into the workplace. WGU has the solution.

As the nation’s leading competency-based university, WGU focuses on developing a highly competent graduate, not just someone who has accumulated credit hours. In fact, at WGU credit hours don’t count. Your progress is determined by your ability to pass rigorous assessments that measure your knowledge and skills as you move through your degree program. In other words, just prove it!

Is WGU Right For You?
Clearly not for everyone, WGU is ideal for the student who can thrive with a high degree of independence. The online delivery of your degree program gives you great flexibility to schedule your own “class” time. And you may be able to accelerate your degree progress if you commit sufficient time and are willing to study hard to prepare for your assessments.

You can also take advantage of competencies you already have in your field of study. For instance, if you’re interested in a Business degree, the knowledge you’ve accumulated from prior academic or work experience may help you move through the assessments more quickly. It’s a very efficient way to obtain your degree.

What about quality?
From the beginning WGU has operated with the highest standards. WGU was founded by the governors of 19 Western states (hence, our name) to “develop competent graduates” and to “expand access.” The competencies and assessments are developed by councils of academic and industry experts. WGU is the only university in the U.S. to be accredited by four regional accrediting bodies and one national accreditation body.

How affordable is WGU?
You will be pleased by the modest tuition of WGU compared to competitive alternatives. WGU is a non-profit university created by the Western governors to offer U.S. citizens a cost-effective, high-quality education.

Western Governors University is regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. (Regional accreditation is considered the highest type of accreditation.) WGU has the distinction of being the only university to receive regional accreditation from four regional accrediting commissions. In part because of its founding by the governors of 19 western states, in February 2003 WGU also received accreditation from the following three commissions:

The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools The Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges The Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges

The Northwest Commission is now considered WGU's "home" accrediting body. WGU is in good company. The commission is also responsible for accrediting other major institutions such as University of Washington, University of Oregon, Gonzaga University, University of Utah, University of Idaho, and BYU, to name just a few. WGU is also nationally accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC).
