Involved, engaged learning is the key to the chemistry program at Agnes Scott, giving all students the opportunity for active, hands-on experience. Approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS), the chemistry program provides students a thorough grounding in the principles and applications of modern chemistry, as well as extensive practical experience with research-quality instruments and experimental design.
Both an American Chemical Society (ACS) certified degree and a non-ACS certified degree are available in chemistry. An interdisciplinary major in biochemistry and molecular biology is offered jointly with the biology department.


What will I study?
A wide variety of chemistry courses are required, as well as courses in mathematics and physics. Sample courses include Basic Laboratory Methods, Organic Chemistry, Instrumental Analysis and Biochemistry. Students acquire a fundamental knowledge of:
Theories that describe matter and chemical reactions ranging from elemental to biological systems;
The techniques and instruments used to investigate atoms, molecules and chemical reactions;
Modern methods for acquiring, analyzing and retrieving data.
