About this School
Bethany University is a four-year private Christian university located in Scotts Valley, California in Santa Cruz County. It is endorsed by the American arm of the Assemblies of God, a large Pentecostal fellowship (denomination). It was formerly called Bethany Bible College and Bethany College. Bethany University is the oldest Assemblies of God institution of higher education. The school began as Glad Tidings Bible Institute in 1919 as a training institute for an inner-city ministry in San Francisco, California. It moved to Scotts Valley in 1950 and became a four-year college in 1955. Bethany was accredited by Senior Commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in 1966. The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing recognized Bethany's teacher education program in 1968. Bethany University is the oldest Assemblies of God institution of higher education. The university offers a variety of majors and minors in four schools: the School of Theological Studies; the School of Arts and Sciences; the School of Professional Studies; the School of Distributed Learning. Along with training future leaders for the church, popluar majors include business, communication and psychology. The University's debate team won a national championship in 2006 and the business department's Students in Free Enterprise () team has won recognition at regional competitions. The Teacher Education Program is also a noteworthy program. Bethany also offers graduate degrees in Education and Clinical Psychology. Athletically, it is part of the NAIA in the California Pacific Conference.
