About this School
Blackburn College is a four-year coeducational private liberal arts college located in Carlinville, Illinois. It was established in 1837 and named for Reverend Gideon Blackburn. This small private college is one of few work-program colleges where students' work is designed to keep the college functioning. The work program is student run, enabling students to gain leadership experience as they manage other students. Blackburn is the only student managed work program college in the nation. The students' work pays for a large portion of room and board expenses; thus, overall costs for this private college are close to public education college expenses. Blackburn's athletic teams compete in Division III of the NCAA's St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, except for the football team, which is part of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.
