Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)

Why become an FNP? Most nurses who come to the FNP program are looking for flexibility. Whether it’s the freedom to control your own schedule, be your own boss, or operate an independent practice, your options multiply as an advanced practice nurse. As a Family Nurse Practitioner, you’ll serve as a primary care provider for individuals, groups and communities. With a focus on health across the entire life span, you may provide prenatal care, family planning services, and well child care; you’ll encourage healthy aging and recommend elder care. You’ll obtain medical histories and perform physical examinations, diagnose and treat acute health problems or chronic diseases, and prescribe medications and other treatments. One of the most important aspects of an FNP’s practice is the promotion of positive health behaviors through education; an FNP encourages patients to stay healthy and offers a broad range of clinical preventive services for those who are at risk.
MSU offers great flexibility in helping you meet your goals. The didactic portion of the FNP program requires a full day of classes one day each week. Because most students within the program continue to work full or part time during their graduate studies, services such as registration, advising, and library research assistance are available evenings as well as during the day. And, whenever possible, the clinical portion of the program is scheduled in your local city or town.
Our classes are small enough for students to get to know one another, form lasting bonds, and serve as a support system for each other while in school.
Career options Our graduates can be found far and wide, from the mountains of West Virginia to the beaches in North and South Carolina. Whether in community health clinics, hospitals, or in their own independent practices, our graduates have found the flexibility they were seeking and are making a difference in the daily lives of people by helping them to stay healthy.
