The Department of South Asia Studies offers students a multi-disciplinary exposure to the cultures and languages of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Nepal, Tibet, as well as the South Asian diaspora. We offer courses in a wide range of disciplines such as archaeology, history, philosophy, religion, art, music, folklore, anthropology, sociology, politics, and economics, as well as in the major classical and modern languages of the subcontinent. Majoring in the department involves three closely intertwined skills: a familiarity with the cultural history of the subcontinent, sound linguistic expertise, and the ability to think about South Asia from a variety of disciplinary positions.
