Demography

Demography has a long and proud tradition at Penn, and students seeking to specialize in it have an unusually broad array of courses from which to pick and a relatively large number of faculty members with whom they can work. Penn is unique in having professors who teach and conduct research within virtually all substantive areas of population. Students specializing in Demography are expected to be conversant with the fundamental methods of Demography and the basic substantive and theoretical issues before the field.

Students and faculty in the Population Studies Center carry out a varied program of population research. The Center provides office and work space for faculty and student associates and maintains a Demography library, and a fully-staffed computing center and data library. Many students secure direct research experience by participating in Center research projects.

Graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania is conducted through graduate groups formed according to different areas of study. These groups, rather than academic departments in the School of Arts and Sciences, administer programs leading to the A.M. and Ph.D. degrees. Study in the field of demography may be pursued in one of three graduate groups: The Graduate Group in Demography, The Graduate Group in Sociology, or The Graduate Group in Economics. Admission to each of these programs is controlled by a separate admissions committee, and each is administered by its own Graduate Group Chair. Those seeking a graduate degree in Demography should apply to the Graduate Group in Demography.
