About this School
Asbury College is a small Christian liberal arts institution located in Wilmore, Kentucky. Although it is a nondenominational school, the college's foundation stems from a Wesleyan-Holiness tradition. Asbury College was founded in 1890 by John Wesley Hughes and is named after Francis Asbury, an early Methodist bishop. With a commitment to academic excellence and spiritual vitality, Asbury College encourages almost 1,300 students to study, worship and serve together on a campus located 20 minutes southwest of Lexington, Kentucky in Wilmore, Kentucky. Primarily a four-year, multi-denominational institution, Asbury is ranked fourth among comprehensive colleges in the South by U.S. News & World Report (2005). Students come from 47 states and 11 foreign nations, and nearly 90 percent of the College’s students live on campus. Asbury College’s 17 academic departments offer 50 majors. Classes are taught by experienced scholars, 82 percent of whom hold terminal degrees in their field of study. The College even offers a few masters degrees in education, including alternative certification programs. At the heart of Asbury's purpose, the learning experience includes many opportunities for student involvement both on and off campus. Internships, exchange programs, missions and community service opportunities are also available and are part of the curriculum in nearly every major. More than 20,000 living alumni of the College surround the globe, leading and serving in all 50 states and at least 70 nations. Although the campus of Asbury Theological Seminary is located across the street from the College, the two are completely separate institutions. Asbury College is a member of the Christian College Consortium. See also Holiness movement
