Alcoholism and substance abuse counselors help alcoholics and substance abusers overcome addiction and establish a more adaptive life-style. Counselors may help the client with initial detoxification; with psychological adjustment to the loss of alcohol and/or drugs by means of individual, group, family and marital counseling; with engagement in a self-help group such as Alcoholics Anonymous and/or Narcotics Anonymous, Gamblers Anonymous, Sex and Love Anonymous; with an understanding of the physiological effects of their addiction; with an awareness of the intellectual, emotional and spiritual ramifications of all addictive disorders; with vocational counseling and the development of new social skills. In short, since alcohol and substance abuse affect the abuser’s entire life, the trained counselor has an unusually rewarding opportunity to work with all aspects of the client’s experience: physical, social, familial, psychological and spiritual.
