-Degree Requirements-
The Associate in Science degree Communications is the start of a rewarding career in the growing communications field. Through this degree program, students can combine classroom studies with internships and practical experience to gain the skills and knowledge needed to succeed. Classes are offered in television production, journalism, television advertising, and mass communication. Internship opportunities are available at Finger Lakes Performing Arts Center and with area radio and television stations. In addition, students in the program work
with FLTV, the local public access television channel, to produce community programming.

Finger Lakes Community College's facilities include a digital media lab, 900-square-foot television studio and control room, two editing rooms with computerized editing systems, and the local Public Access Television Channel.

Upon completion of the A.S. in Communications degree, students will be prepared to transfer to four-year colleges and universities to complete the baccalaureate degree communications, journalism, television and related fields. Graduates can seek employment as camera operators,
video editors, industrial video specialists, electronic field production specialists, advertising salespersons, and on-air personnel.

The goals of the Associate in Science in Communications degree program are:
  • To provide a challenging communications curriculum that will prepare students to successfully transfer to four-year institutions and pursue the baccalaureate degree.
  • To improve the student's ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  • To provide students with practical experience in video production, including planning and writing scripts, videography, and editing.
  • To develop and sharpen the student's capacity for critical thinking and aesthetic interpretation.
  • To promote and encourage personal creative expression as well as understanding of the elements involved in the creative process.
  • To develop in students all of the 11 Competencies identified by Finger Lakes Community College as learning outcomes of a liberal education.
