The Drafting Design Technology program offers area of specialization: Civil Design Major .The choices award the Associate of Applied Science Degree. They follow the same curriculum with the exception of two courses. Students will take the Civil Design course sequences, depending on the area of specialization.
All students learn construction document production with a heavy emphasis on computer aided drafting (CAD). The heart of the curricula includes another 10 courses custom-designed to ground students in:
Building Materials
Code Review
Mapping
Mechanical Systems
Structural Design
Type and strength of materials
Students also take a core of general education courses and physics.
Learning Outcomes
At the completion of the plan of study the student will be able to:
Use a computer drafting program to create accurate architectural documents to meet professional standards;
Select and apply proper uses and properties of architectural components and materials to develop buildable assemblies and details meeting construction standards;
Use problem solving and critical thinking skills to design and document functional solutions to meet established criteria and standards when given a design program and problem;
Analyze an architectural plan drawing for proper compliance with local building and zoning codes;
Apply appropriate terminology to effectively communicate with professionals in the architecture,engineering design office environment;
Exhibit professionalism through active participation in class activities and successful completion of group projects.
Career Opportunities/Salary
Classroom and lab experiences prepare Architectural Design Major and Civil Design Option graduates for a dynamic career in construction or engineering offices such as architectural, civil, mechanical, and structural. COTC graduates are skilled in the design and production of working drawings using CAD. Additionally, graduates know building codes, site work, architectural materials, and structural and mechanical systems, surveying, and fabricating. Graduates can work on the design and construction of bridges, buildings, dams,highways, treatment facilities, and water supply.
