In the field of Information Technology, Computer Support Technicians are the specialists who manage an organization’s PCs, laptops, thin clients, handheld devices and associated peripheral components.

These specialists install, configure and upgrade PCs, laptops and related equipment, diagnose and troubleshoot hardware and software problems, perform preventive maintenance, and install required software updates. They establish and maintain the connectivity of client computer systems to the local area network (LAN) and to the Internet. They provide network and local printing resources and support the wide array of computer accessories that keep workers productive in the modern work environment.

In addition to technical skills, PC specialists need strong people skills and the ability to actively listen to the concerns and needs of end users. They also need strong time management skills, and the ability to document hardware, software and network problems and their associated solutions for future reference.

The Computer Information Technology degree was designed to prepare a student for a career in network administration, help desk, pc support or in many related job roles.

Preparation includes learning about:
  • Planning and building networks
  • Troubleshooting networks
  • Maintaining technical documents
  • Planning and implementing security policies
  • Communicating with peers, clients and supervisors
  • Data management and protection
  • Internet connectivity using TCP/IP protocols
  • Cabling fundamentals
  • Hardware repair
  • Software deployment
  • Networking standards

This is a hands-on program. In the lab environment, students will learn by setting up routers, switches, network cabling, wireless access points, network servers and PCs. Students will also participate in internships with organizations that create or use Information Technology.
