The Computer Support Specialist Program is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions with computer hardware training. Most computer support specialists provide technical assistance and support for customers.

Other positions that this program qualifies students for include help-desk technicians and technical support specialists. Support specialists may work for small, medium or large companies assisting staff with troubleshooting software, networking problems, computer repair, and computer installation.

Although support specialists help many types of computer users, there is a great need for communication skills. Giving advice, answering questions and interacting with customers are necessary skills for a computer specialist. Employers look for specialists who have strong fundamental computer skills as well as good interpersonal and communications skills. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor, computer specialist jobs will increase faster than average through the year 2014. This growth is due to the increasing complexity of technology used in the business world.

According to America's Career Infonet that lists the 25 fastest growing occupations from 2000-2010, computer support specialists that have graduated from an Associate of Applied Science program, rank #2 with a 97 percent increase in new jobs. Northwest Kansas is expected to have a 72 percent increase. Colby Community College can provide the training to meet the challenge of the computer hardware and software job market.
