The Department of Computer Sciences offers an Associate of Science (AS) degree program in Computer Information Science (CSIS). This program is intended for the student who does not want a stronger theoretical emphasis. It focuses on the problem solving skills and techniques needed to provide computer-based software solutions to practical problems, integrating fundamental practical knowledge in the fields of software engineering, database systems, programming languages, computer networks, and project management for software development.
The program provides a good foundation in Computer Information Science. The mix of courses with, for instance, computer science, business, and bible, provides students with a broad educational base and helps fashion their abilities to better engage in critical thinking and problem solving. Recipients of the AS in CSIS degree will find many opportunities for employment in computer programming and application development and can also transfer in junior standing to a BS degree program in Computer Information Science.

The Computer Science (CS) program is intended for those who want a strong theoretical grounding integrating computer systems and architectures, software systems and programming, and mathematical theory of computation. The Informatics (INF) program focuses on information and investigating the policies and procedures that optimize its organization, flow, and storage. The CSIS program is intended for those who want a strong emphasis on software systems (and programming) from their analysis through design, implementation, project management, evaluation, and social and ethical impact.
2. What programming languages will I learn throughout the curriculum?
You will learn C++ in Introduction to CS and Programming, Visual BASIC in Visual Programming, Java in Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming, and MS Access in Database Concepts.
3. Can I move on to do a BS in CSIS when I complete the AS in CSIS program?
Yes, 52 of the 67 credit hours of the AS in CSIS will contribute towards the BS in CSIS. Normally, if you have completed the AS in CSIS, you will need a further two years to obtain a BS in CSIS.
