The Criminal Justice Technology curriculum is designed to provide knowledge of criminal justice systems and operations. Study will focus on local, state, and federal law enforcement, judicial processes, corrections, and security services. The criminal justice system's role within society will be explored. Emphasis is on criminal justice system, criminology, juvenile justice, criminal and constitutional law, investigative principles, ethics and community relations, and correctional systems/alternatives. Additional study may include issues and concepts of government, counseling, communications, computers and technology. Study is required in the fields of sociology, psychology, humanities, math, writing skills and public speaking. Employment opportunities exist in a variety of local, state, and federal law enforcement, corrections, and security fields. Examples include police officer, deputy sheriff, county detention officer, state trooper, intensive probation/parole surveillance officer,magistrate, state correctional officer, and loss prevention specialist. Students who are already employed in criminal justice agencies should find enhanced opportunities for advancement and a wider range of employment options. Additional credit may be awarded for completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET). Student must show successful completion of the training with a transcript from an accredited BLET program in the state of North Carolina and final approval from the Department Head, Criminal Justice Technology. Final awarding of credit must be approved by the Associate Dean, Health and Public Services.
