Mission: Our purpose is to provide a comprehensive educational program designed to enhance the ability of our students to participate in Georgia's development. Athens Technical College (ATC) in Athens, Georgia offers an Associate Degree Diagnostic Medical Sonography with specialties in abdominal and OB/GYN ultrasound. All prerequisite courses must be completed before the DMS sequenced courses begin. Once the DMS sequenced courses begin students must follow the coursework in the specific order given as they build knowledge and skills and progress to another level. ATC's Sonography Program prepares students to take the national American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) Examination in physics, abdominal and OB/GYN specialties. This program includes:

The mission of the diagnostic Medical Sonography is to prepare qualified entry-level sonographers who are highly skilled, technically competent, ethical, professional, compassionate, and responsive to the needs of the patient and needs of the organization. The profession requires critical thinking skills, judgment and the ability to provide appropriate health care services. The sonographer uses technologically advanced equipment that utilizes high-frequency sound waves to produce dynamic visual pictures of internal body structures. The images are effectively evaluated by physicians to make a medical diagnosis. The DMS program provides the education of students to become sonographers that have an advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology and pathophysiology. The entry-level sonographer performs appropriate abdominal, OB/GYN, small parts, pediatrics, and the imaging, color flow and Doppler. Formal education and extensive clinical training are combined in this two-year program. Graduates will be awarded Associate Degree Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Graduates will be eligible to take the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in the Physics, Abdomen and OB/GYN categories.
