The Digital Media Design curriculum at COTC is a broad-based and intensive exploration of the process and the business of digital design. Students can expect to study the principles of design, game theory, and programming in addition to courses in specific digital software tools. Skills taught include critical thinking, design approaches, the underlying theories of digital game development, and production techniques.
The curriculum is focused on developing the student’s technical skills and creative vision, with an emphasis on building a portfolio that will prepare the student to enter the workforce or continue their education at a four-year college.
Additional elective courses help prepare the student to develop good business skills for either entering the job market or developing their own business. Students will learn to develop resumes and other marketing tools specifically targeted toward the digital media field.
The Game Design Option
Courses in this option provide a thorough overview of digital design, including Web, 3-D, and video, with a focused emphasis on the elements of game design and development. All of the courses are centered around a core set of design principles that provide a strong base for the student’s development, and most are project-based. Concepts learned in one course are expanded upon and applied in others.
Learning Outcomes

The creation of games has evolved along with their complexity. Students with game design degrees may find work in computer game development and in related fields.
The industry is growing rapidly. U.S. sales of games totaled $12.5 billion in 2006, a 19% increase over the previous year. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a nearly 69 percent increase in the gaming industry through 2012, making it the third fastest growing industry over the next decade.
