The mission of the Health Studies Program at BSC is to provide all students with a wide range of courses that enables them to explore their academic interests and potential career paths in the healthcare industry. Through a curriculum that provides a foundation in the biological sciences and the liberal arts, the Health Studies Program also prepares graduates for transfer to four-year colleges in the life and health sciences. Learning Objectives
The student will:
* Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental terminology and concepts related to life processes common to all living systems, whether plant animal or microbe.
* Recognize the relationship between structure and function based on their knowledge of the human body.
* Demonstrate a working knowledge of modern biological research including experimental design, basic laboratory techniques and interpreting data.
* Describe the nature of health and illness among various cultural groups and demonstrate an appreciation for the ways in which these cultures assess and treat illness.
* Describe the current state of the biotechnology industry especially the impact of the human genome project and its potential to alter the field of medicine.
