Occupational Therapy is a health and rehabilitation profession that provides services to individuals of all ages who are physically, psychologically, or developmentally disabled, including those suffering from strokes, heart diseases, arthritis, diabetes, serious burns, spinal cord injuries and psychiatric disorders.
The profession tailors the rehabilitation process individually and through evaluation and treatment, seeks to achieve restoration or improvement of impaired functions in every day activities (the occupations of self-care, work and leisure) that are important to the patient.
The goal of occupational therapy is to assist patients in achieving a maximum level of independent living and quality of life by developing the capacities that remain after disease, accident, or deformity.
The Occupational Therapy Assistant works under the direct supervision of the Occupational Therapist and is able to perform most routine treatment procedures.
Employment Opportunities
Shortages and vacancies are being reported in rural areas and in several practice settings, for example in school systems needing pediatric practitioners.
The fastest growing segment of the population is the elderly who will need OT services. Additionally, premature infants, survivors of spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries and severe orthopedic injuries will require extensive occupational therapy.
