Respiratory therapists work to evaluate, treat, and care for patients with breathing disorders. They perform special tests to measure lung capacity and the levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide and pH in the blood. They connect and monitor people on ventilators, and perform physiotherapy to clear the lungs of mucous.

DACC offers this program through a shared cooperative program with Parkland College. It is a flexible program with different options for students. Examples are: a) Students may enroll for the entire program at Parkland College; b) Students may schedule support classes at DACC and Respiratory Care classes at Parkland College, and c) Students may choose to take all their support classes at DACC and Respiratory Care course work at DACC via interactive video.

Most of the clinical work can be done at Provena United Samaritans Medical Center. Students, if they desire, can find part-time work in Respiratory Care while they are attending classes. Respiratory Care employment outlook is excellent; there is a tremendous shortage of skilled therapists.

Where Can You Find a Job?
Most respiratory therapists work in hospitals where they perform intensive care, critical care, and neonatal procedures. They are typically a vital part of the hospital’s lifesaving response team that handles patient emergencies. An increasing number of respiratory therapists are now working in skilled nursing facilities, physicians’ offices, home health agencies, specialized care hospitals, medical equipment supply companies, and patients’ homes.
