Speech Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) is an emerging profession. Laws regulating the education, scope of service, use and supervision of SLPAs in the State of Illinois were passed as recently as January 2002. SLPAs perform speech therapy tasks as prescribed, directed and supervised by certified speech language pathologists. Speech Assistants may work in subacute physical rehabilitation units, inpatient and outpatient physical rehabilitation clinics, long-term care settings, schools, and clinics.
The purpose of the Speech Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) program is to prepare students for employment as speech language pathology assistants in hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, clinics and schools. The SLPA program graduate will be eligible to apply for licensure with the Illinois Department of Professional Regulations.
