Associate degrees in Mass Communication + Media Studies: A program that focuses on the analysis and criticism of media institutions and media texts, how people experience and understand media content, and the roles of media in producing and transforming culture. Includes instruction in communications regulation, law, and policy; media history; media aesthetics, interpretation, and criticism; the social and cultural effects of mass media; cultural studies; the economics of media industries; visual and media literacy; and the psychology and behavioral aspects of media messages, interpretation, and utilization.
The following program of study follows the Communication Field of Study Curricula for Advertising/Public Relations, Journalism, and Mass Communication/Radio-TV as adopted by the Higher Education Coordinating Board. Students who follow this curricula will be able to major in the above fields of study and transfer between 12 and 15 hours of course work in these major program options to public two- and four-year institutions in Texas.
This program is a comprehensive exposure to mass communication communications media. Students learn the inner workings of a variety of media, including print, broadcast and Web.
