American Studies offers an interdisciplinary approach to the society and culture of the United States, past and present, drawing on a broad range of academic fields, including American literature, anthropology, art history, cultural studies, economics, ethnic studies, film studies, history, music, political science, religion, sociology, and theater arts. The program not only integrates courses offered in an array of academic departments at Case but also draws upon the rich cultural resources of other University Circle and Cleveland-area institutions, including the Cleveland Institute of Art, Cleveland Institute of Music, Cleveland Art Museum, Western Reserve Historical Society, and Rock & Rock Hall of Fame. Because of the diversity of choices allowed by such a major, each student devises an individualized program of study under faculty supervision.

The list of possible courses from which a student must choose changes every semester because every class in the College of Arts and Sciences that focuses at least 2/3 of its time on American culture is eligible to count towards the American Studies major. There are far too many courses to cross-list.

What can you do with a degree American Studies? Just about anything. The interdisciplinary nature of American Studies encourages the kind of initiative and creative thinking that gives our majors an advantage in later life. American Studies provides excellent preparation for planning careers in a variety of fields, including but not limited to law, journalism, social work, museum studies, teaching, and communications.
