Program Purpose
The Ancient Near Eastern Studies (ANES) major is primarily designed to prepare students for graduate programs and future academic careers in Bible studies, other aspects of ancient Near Eastern studies, and ANES-related library science. With its interdisciplinary focus on a significant region of the world and its emphasis on acquiring functional capacity in a language, ANES is also a good liberal arts major for students planning a career in CES, law, business, or any other field requiring well-developed research, analytical, and writing skills.

Expected Learning Outcomes
Successful Ancient Near Eastern Studies majors will:
1. know and be able to interpret the significant events and developments in the history and cultures of the ancient Near East, including the history and culture of ancient Israel in its Near Eastern context.
2. be able to interpret major ancient Near East texts and analyze their significance for understanding the cultures in which they were produced.
3. acquire and demonstrate functional capacity in the languages and textual interpretation of the Hebrew Bible and/or Greek New Testament, being able to read, comprehend, analyze, and interpret these significant religious and historical texts with methodological soundness.
4. develop the capacity for informed, independent, critical thinking and be able to perform appropriate library and online research utilized in the professional study of the ancient Near East.
5. be able to write concise as well as more substantial research papers that utilize approaches from the Social Sciences and Humanities and that integrate language and interpretive skills to analyze ancient Near Eastern topics.
6. have considered and received affirmation concerning the significance of integrity in their academic and professional pursuits.
7. have considered and received affirmation concerning the relationship between academics and faith, and will have been encouraged to engage in a spiritually informed, lifelong pursuit of learning, scholarship, and service.
