Overview
The Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Meteorology provides a practical understanding of the physics and dynamics of the atmosphere and prepares the graduate for a range of meteorologist and weather forecasting positions in government or the private sector. This degree exceeds the requirements for a meteorology degree recommended by the American Meteorological Society. A minor in Aviation Weather is also offered.

Emphasis is placed on applying theory to operational weather forecasting and decision-making for weather-sensitive industries, including possible hands-on experience as a meteorology intern. Students can choose from four areas of concentration: Research, Meteorology with Flying, Military Meteorologist, and Meteorology for Aviation Operations.

Students utilize a synoptic lab and weather center and a variety of rooftop weather observing equipment. Research activities within the department include studies of mid-latitude cyclones, orographic precipitation, weather radar, severe weather, the southwest monsoon and cirrus clouds. Students study and forecast complex atmospheric phenomena ranging from severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, to cyclones, fronts and jet streams, to global climate and how it is changing. Situated in the northwest region of Arizona, the Prescott campus experiences a full range of seasonal weather for study in applications in flight, space exploration and military applications.

For the "weather nut" who is fascinated by weather patterns, causes, behaviors and the impact of weather systems, Embry-Riddle Prescott offers the most complete exposure and experience in preparation for a career in Applied Meteorology.
