Career Preparation
Students completing the B.S. Applied Physics Selected Options program will be prepared for work in a scientific or technical career in industry or government, or for graduate studies in applied physics, engineering, physical sciences, or professional fields such as medicine, law, or business.

Evidence of Learning
Direct Measures

1. Student mastery of the primary physical theories and analytic, computational and experimental skills will be assessed during the supervision of mentored research, from the written capstone report, and by a senior exit examination.
2. The capstone project report should demonstrate a theoretical understanding of a student’s research field (at the senior level of coursework) as well as a synthesis of physics with the student's selected interdisciplinary emphasis.
3. Achievement in written communication will be assessed through course writing assignments and the capstone project report. Students are expected to give oral presentations of their independent research in: (1) professional meetings, (2) Spring Research Conferences, or (3) research group meetings. Achievement in oral presentation skills will be judged by independent faculty review and awards received by students for presentations.
4. Ethical conduct will be assessed through the student’s practices in honestly and accurately reporting research results and in the attribution of credit for the work of others in written and oral presentations.
5. The primary measure of student achievement in conducting independent research is the capstone project report. Other indications of accomplishment include peer-reviewed scientific papers with student co-authors and student presentations at professional meetings.

Indirect Measures
1. Senior exit interviews and surveys
2. Alumni surveys. We send a one-page survey to alumni three and ten years after graduation to receive feedback on the relevance of skills and knowledge gained, as well as the effectiveness of advisement they received as undergraduates.
3. Acceptance of graduates into graduate programs.
4. Employment recruitment activity and student success in obtaining employment.
5. Feedback on student performance in graduate schools and employment.
6. Faculty qualitative evaluation of preparation for and performance in coursework and class participation.
