The Department of Art offers concentrations in Art Education.

The undergraduate program offers a broad‑based training in the visual arts. In addition to course work, internships give firsthand experience in such areas as graphic design, musicology, exhibition planning and community art programs. Students planning to pursue graduate study at some point in their careers should work closely with their advisers to select appropriate course work beyond the 36‑hour requirements of the major, thus earning themselves a competitive edge in the application process at the graduate level.

A student majoring in art must achieve a grade of “C-” or better in all of the required courses within the art program, repeating courses if necessary to achieve the required grade.

Students should be aware that typically there are additional hours outside of class to complete course requirements and expenses for materials and tools in studio courses beyond the required fees. Field trips to museums, studios and commercial galleries in the region, in New York City and at other sites are regularly a part of many art history and studio art courses and include additional costs.

A gallery calendar of changing exhibitions is maintained throughout the academic year in the Wallace L. Anderson Gallery within the art building. One of these exhibitions is the student show, and art majors and minors are encouraged to set aside their best work to submit to this annual showing. In an adjacent gallery is a continuing exhibition of works from the permanent art collection.
