The Department provides support for the studio component of EKU's teaching degree Art, through the Foundation and Core requirements listed above. Majors in Art Education must also complete nine courses, including student teaching, for their K-12 certification requirements. Faculty in Art Education hold their primary assignment in the College of Education, where demands on their time for monitoring student teaching is greatest. But one position is shared between that college and Art, and both art educators on the faculty have an office in the Campbell Building for meetings with students. In addition, a fully-equipped studio in Campbell has been dedicated to the use of the Art Education program.
Classes in Art Education include the study of fundamental concepts and theories in education, and exploration of art studio processes, materials, and activities for K-12 students. As preparation for K-12 art teacher certification, courses also cover the symbolic development of children, and instructional planning and methodologies. An important element of the degree program is the development of the teaching portfolio necessary for Kentucky teacher certification, but students are also guided in their preparation for the art art education content questions of the PRAXIS national teacher examination.
