At a variety of levels of organization, from the molecular to the cellular to the organismal, biology is becoming more accessible to approaches that are commonly used in engineering, including mathematical modeling, systems theory, computation, and abstraction-based synthesis. Conversely, the accelerating pace of discovery in the biological sciences suggests new design principles that will have important practical applications in future synthetic biological and biomedical systems and devices. The BioEngineering Option at Caltech unites engineering analysis and synthetic approaches to solve frontier problems in biological engineering.
To respond to the diversity of backgrounds and objectives within our research community, the Bioengineering Option has recently created three Sub-Options, each offering an academic program tailored to the intellectual focus of the participating students:
