Undergraduate teaching in the biological sciences at Harvard spans two departments: MCB and OEB (Organismic and Evolutionary Biology). Undergraduates with interests in these areas can choose one of two "fields of concentration" (Harvard's phrase for "major"): Biochemical Sciences or Biology. The department of MCB has sole responsibility for Biochemical Sciences and shares with OEB responsibility for Biology. Each concentration sets its own requirements and has its own style of advising and tutorial. The Biochemical Sciences concentration is primarily concerned with the structure and function of molecules and cells and draws on methodologies ranging from chemistry and physics to molecular biology and genetics. The Biology concentration principally explores the structure, function, behavior, and evolution of cells, organisms, populations, and ecosystems. It draws on methodologies ranging from genetics, molecular biology, ecology, and paleontology. Courses given by the various departments are open to students from all concentrations.
