Today, biology stands as one of the dominant sciences, and will continue to be a significant force well into the future. Whether your interests center on understanding the molecular and genetic aspects of heart disease, or on the consequences of extinction in tropical ecosystems, our Biology Department is well prepared to give you an excellent education.

Whether providing cutting edge instruction in our wireless classrooms, or giving hands-on research experiences in our labs, our faculty will always attempt to give you the best that Fairfield has to offer. You will be guided by faculty with:
  • Excellent academic credentials
  • A lively interest in research
  • A thorough commitment to teaching

The Biology Department is made-up of an active group of scholars committed to undergraduate education. Our research is supported by a number of external grants, and the faculty regularly publish in some of the most respected national and international journals. Undergraduates become vital members of the research teams, and students are often co-authors on our publications.

We also have a broad range of seminars on diverse topics such as:
  • Bacterial Pathogenesis
  • Human Disease
  • Coral Reefs
  • Ecology of the North Atlantic Coast

The biology department seeks to provide you with an understanding and appreciation of the diversity of living things, their adaptations to the environment, and their evolutionary and ecological relationships. By studying these at the molecular, cellular, organismal, and population levels, the program emphasizes the similar problems faced by all living organisms. You will receive "hands-on" experience in the laboratory skills most critical to today's biologist, the molecular biologist. These fundamental understandings are necessary for you as an aspiring biologist, to grasp the issues of the day as they arise in medical, dental, allied health, and graduate schools, and in careers in the life and medical sciences.
