Chemistry is the branch of the physical sciences that deals with material substances. Its purview includes the elements, the combination of elements and formation of compounds, the phenomena that arise from exposure of substances to different physical conditions, and reactions between substances.
The undergraduate study of chemistry at Adelphi is based on the principle of progression: a progression from the simplest to the most difficult concepts. This progression starts with general chemistry, which introduces basic concepts, followed by surveys of the different branches of chemistry, these being organic, analytical, inorganic, physical chemistry, and biochemistry.
As a sign of the department's belief in the importance of the laboratory experience, and in contrast to the prevailing practice at many universities, laboratory classes at Adelphi are all taught by faculty. In addition, juniors and seniors have the opportunity to undertake research in the department's laboratories, under the guidance of faculty.
