Purpose
Prepare men and women of character to enter professional schools or alternative careers that involve aspects of chemistry. This preparation includes study of the subdisciplines of chemistry (except biochemistry and instrumental analysis associated with analytical chemistry) and opportunities to participate in undergraduate research.
Expected Learning Outcomes
1. Graduates of this program will have demonstrated a mastery of chemistry at a level that will allow them to succeed as students in professional schools or in careers that benefit from a solid understanding of physical science. This broad outcome is further elaborated in outcomes 2 – 5.
2. Program graduates will have demonstrated a mastery of key concepts in four chemistry subdisciplines: analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry.
3. Program graduates will be able to perform basic laboratory procedures used in inorganic and small molecule analysis, organic synthesis, and in physical chemistry.
4. Program graduates will be able to communicate the results of scientific experiments in oral reports, technical graphics, and written reports.
5. Program graduates will be able to search the chemical literature for published work relevant to a project of interest, and to read and understand technical literature related to the discipline.
6. Students approaching the end of their course of study will be able to make informed choices among post-graduate opportunities for work or further education.
7. Graduates will understand professional and scientific ethics.
8. Graduates will appreciate the role of faith in God by scientists. This outcome stands apart, but it is an important aim of a BYU education.
