Educational Objectives
The educational objectives of the B.S. in Civil Engineering Technology program define the skills, knowledge and attributes that will be needed and achieved by the graduates for a successful career and professional accomplishments three to fours years after graduation. The B.S. in Civil Engineering Technology program will produce graduates who:
1. Have a technical education with an appropriate combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in analyzing and designing systems or structures, specifying construction methods and materials, performing cost estimates and analyses and inspecting and managing civil projects, which will enable them to enter and advance their careers in the planning, design, construction, operation or maintenance of buildings and infrastructures.
2. Can engage effectively in oral, written and graphical communications and are comfortable in both interpersonal and public settings.
3. Possess the necessary foundation with which to continue their formal education and obtain advanced degrees such as M.S. in Construction Management, M.B.A (Industrial Management), M.S. in Environmental Studies, M.S. in Technology Management or other related fields.
4. Have the knowledge and skills that enable them to participate in life-long learning and to adapt to an ever-changing, global technological environment.
5. Conduct themselves as both responsible professionals and global citizens, who are aware of and understand ethical issues and societal needs and problems.
Program Specific Outcomes:
Baccalaureate degree programs must demonstrate that graduates, in addition to the competencies above, are capable of:
planning and preparing design and construction documents, such as specifications, contracts, change orders, engineering drawings, and construction schedules;
performing economic analyses and cost estimates related to design, construction, operations and maintenance of systems in the civil technical specialties;
selecting appropriate engineering materials and practices;
applying basic technical concepts to the solution of civil problems involving hydraulics, hydrology, geotechnics, structures, material behavior, transportation systems, and water and wastewater systems; and
performing standard analysis and design in at least three of the recognized technical specialties within civil engineering technology that are appropriate to the goals of the program.
