The Communication for Advocacy major is multidisciplinary in nature, blending courses from the Communication Department with courses from the Departments of English/Professional Writing, Political Science, Sociology, and Social Work leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree. Students develop substantial grounding in communication theory and skills, as well as an understanding of the relationship between individuals and social institutions. They examine how issues are addressed through public policy, and how citizens can influence policy decisions. The fundamentals of research design are taught and students acquire familiarity with various research methods. They learn to develop proposals, gain experience in grant-writing, and examine various social issues and advocacy efforts designed to address them.
In addition to developing competencies in writing, speaking, leadership, and critical thinking, students cultivate their advocacy skills, understanding of the non-profit work environment, and desire to work for the improvement of society.
The major is designed for students dedicated to serving the social good as active and socially responsible communication professionals in a variety of non-profit organizations such as hospitals, foundations, educational institutions, government agencies, and more. Students also receive excellent preparation for admission to a variety of graduate programs.
