Composition degree is designed for the serious composer and emphasizes the western art music tradition. However, included in the breadth of instructional emphases is film scoring and other commercial compositional applications. The degree will prepare the student to compose in a variety of genres, including traditional instrument families, solo instrumental works, vocal works, electronic mediums, and larger ensembles, including orchestra, concert band, and choir. The focus of this degree is on preparing a portfolio adequate for submission to graduate schools, and to prepare the student for professional work including, but not limited to, composing for professional ensembles, arranging, conducting, and music printing. All composers must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of traditional harmony and must be able to develop pieces which reflect contemporary tonalities and techniques.
