One of the fastest growing career areas today is early childhood education. The demand for high quality childcare reflects the needs of working families and the growing concern about helping children become successful learners. There is a critical need for trained educators who understand the unique developmental needs and learning styles of young children. Early childhood programs seek professionals as teachers, directors, trainers and consultants.

There is national interest in providing early childhood programs and an awakening recognition of the importance of providing high quality programs for all children.

OPPORTUNITIES
A Bachelor's degree Early Childhood Education gives flexibility in that one can be certified from birth through third grade to teach in child care centers, preschools or lower primary (Pre-kindergarten – third grade) classrooms. Salary depends on employing agencies and usually is commensurate with teachers' salaries in given districts.

There are increasing employment opportunities in the child-care areas as more businesses consider providing on-site programs for their employees. A number of CSM graduates have established their own early childhood centers.

Public and parochial school opportunities are available to certified ECE educators for positions in pre-kindergarten through third grade. Other opportunities include work in before/after school programs, parent education programs, and Head Start.

THE PROGRAM
CSM offer Bachelor's degree Early Childhood Education.

The Bachelor's degree prepares the student for certification for teaching in pre-kindergarten through third grades. Graduates are prepared to assume greater responsibilities in professional settings.

Learning within the ECE program is more than just a classroom experience. Observation and practical (in the field) experiences play a major role in this program. Various agencies and schools in the Omaha area are utilized.

Students may seek certification by the Nebraska State Department of Education in grades pre-kindergarten through third upon completion of the program. Many students combine in majors in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education in order to receive certification from pre-kindergarten though sixth grades.
