All majors must complete LC 212 or LJ 212, or demonstrate equivalent proficiency in one of the languages of East Asia — Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Korean, or Cantonese. Other languages, such as Vietnamese, Bahasa Malay, or Tagalog, may be used to satisfy the language requirement if appropriate to the student's academic program. Please note that as of now, Japanese and Mandarin Chinese are the only East Asian languages taught at the 212 level at Boston University. Independent study-abroad programs may provide opportunities to achieve proficiency in other languages.

All East Asian Studies majors must complete IR 275/PO 365. No substitutions are allowed without the written approval of the Chairman of the Program on East Asian Studies.

Majors must take one course each from the Pre-Modern Heritage and Modern Transformation lists. No substitutions are allowed without the written approval of the Chairman of the Program on East Asian Studies.

In addition, students must take at least seven other courses in East Asian Studies:
-Of these, at least three must be in the humanities (art history, language, literature, philosophy, or religion) and at least three must be in the social sciences (anthropology, communications, geography, history, international relations, or sociology). No more than one can be an East Asian language class at the 300 level or higher.
At least three must be at the 400 level or higher (300 level for Religion).

A group of at least six courses from one or more disciplines that provide a coherent theoretical or comparative perspective on the student's study of East Asia. (For example, one student put together courses from political science, international relations, and economics to form a coherent grouping in "Policy Studies".)

Study-abroad programs, such as Boston University's programs in Beijing and Kyoto, are recommended but not required. Students may also arrange non-B.U. study-abroad programs, but must receive prior approval for East Asian Studies course credits from the Chairman of the Program on East Asian Studies.
