A progressive society is one that ensures that all children have access to high-quality education, regardless of disabilities and exceptionalities. In fact, under the Americans with Disabilities Act, schools in the U.S. are required to provide the necessary resources to teach every child. This is why there is always a critical need for teachers who are professionally qualified to meet the specialized educational needs of exceptional children. As an exceptional student education major at Flagler, you can expect to graduate with the skills and confidence you need to provide leadership in this field and build a meaningful career truly ensuring that no child is left behind.
What does the program at Flagler offer
Small classes; a dedicated faculty well-versed in the newest innovations in teaching methods and technology; a rigorous, challenging curriculum; and extensive classroom-teaching opportunities are the hallmarks of Flagler’s outstanding exceptional education program. In addition to the elementary education course work, our exceptional student education majors complete course work in assessing and educating children with varying exceptionalities. They also complete 80 hours of practicum prior to their student-teaching experience. As a result, they graduate with skills in working with exceptional children who may be placed in a regular classroom—an additional competency which makes them very attractive to school districts across the nation. Flagler also has one of the longest-running, state-approved, dual-certification programs, allowing you to become eligible for certification in both special education and elementary education.
