At Bryn Athyn, we'll give you the theoretical and practical preparation to be
a successful teacher in a public school, New Church school, or private school
at the grade level that fits your interests. We offer secondary certification
in English, history, and religion.
Whether or not you intend to pursue teaching within the New Church, studying
education at Bryn Athyn will give you the opportunity to study educational theories
and practices within the context of the spiritual principles. Some specialized
education courses offered include integrating art into the curriculum, music
education, health and physical education, educating diverse learners, New Church
perspectives, classroom management, and teaching in a multi-age classroom.
Pennsylvania Certification
We collaborate with nearby Holy Family University (HFU) to provide a bachelor
of science degree with Pennsylvania state certification in the following areas.
* Elementary Education K-6—all course work done on campus, senior
teaching experience through Holy Family University
* Special Education—four courses taken at HFU, senior teaching experience
through Holy Family University
* Early Childhood Education—three courses taken a HFU, senior teaching
experience through Holy Family University
Upon completion of the program, you'll receive your degree from Bryn Athyn
and apply for certification through Holy Family University. Application for
certification is not a degree requirement, nor is it automatic. Secondary certification
in history, English, or biology can be earned through respective major programs
at Bryn Athyn and require two to three courses at Holy Family University in
addition to the senior teaching courses.
Note: Certification requirements will be significantly different for students
who plan to graduate after 2013. Students seeking certification in elementary
education will need to choose between a PK-4 degree or one that prepares them
to teach grades 4-8. Those seeking a 4-8 certification will need to choose an
area of specialization similar to those required for secondary certification.
Degree requirements for these programs are being developed and will be published
when they are available.
Certification in Secondary Education
Bryn Athyn College offers certification programs in biology, English, and history
that train students to become high school teachers. The programs combine teacher
preparation with solid instruction in the discipline, culminating in a semester
of student teaching. We partner with Holy Family University for certification
training.
