Boise State University Bachelor degree Elementary Education - Bilingual
|
|
|
This is a regular Bachelor of Arts degree consisting of 130 semester credit hours of coursework at Boise State University. It takes approximately four academic years to complete if you are a fulltime student. This degree is designed to prepare elementary school teachers (K-8th grades); it does not prepare you to teach high school. However, you would be able to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) and bilingual classes at the high school level. You would not be able to teach classes at the high school level that are not designated bilingual classes.
Bilingual Education
To be a bilingual teacher is to be prepared to teach all content area subjects (mathematics, science, literacy, social studies, etc.) in two languages, Spanish and English, and to teach them in the context of both the Latino and Anglo cultures. In other words, you must be fluent in Spanish and in English. The four major goals of bilingual education are:
1.To teach English to non-English speaking or limited English proficient children;
2.To maintain students at grade level in the content subjects while they are learning English by teaching them in a language they understand;
3.To ensure that students meet the same rigorous academic standards that all other students meet; and
4.To ensure that they meet graduation requirement on time and graduate with their peers.
