If you are interested in the field of education, there are few careers that are as demanding—or as rewarding—as that of an educator in a modern elementary school. You will explore how children learn; acquire techniques of classroom organization and management that allow you to work with diverse groups of children of all cultural, linguistic, ethnic, and class backgrounds; and explore new and evolving instructional strategies and assessment tools. And—given the growing public school enrollment numbers and the ever-growing demand for smaller class sizes—you will graduate ready to meet the increasing demand nationwide for elementary school teachers.
What does the program at Flagler offer?
As an elementary education major at Flagler, you will take advantage of dedicated faculty and an excellent curriculum that blends theory and scholarship with practical teaching experiences to develop basic competencies, knowledge, and expertise in all of the subjects taught in the elementary classroom (including reading, writing, mathematics, the arts, sciences, social studies, physical education, and health). You may choose to major just in elementary education, or select from among two specialized majors resulting in dual certification (Exceptional Student Education Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing) and one leading to single certification (Elementary Education K-6). All are state-approved education degree programs that include the required ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) endorsement. Flagler also has one of the longest-running, dual-certification programs in Florida, allowing you to increase your marketability upon graduation.
