The English Language Arts Program prepares teachers, specialists, teacher educators, and researchers for services at the various levels of English/language arts. This program focuses on research findings in literature and language, the improvement of instructional methodology, materials and curriculum, and service to schools and children.

The undergraduate English Education Program is designed to prepare teachers English (5-9 and 9-12) and those planning careers in related fields such as publishing, curriculum development, educational research, and administration. Students develop competency in instructional strategies, as well as in methods which are specific to the age of the learner, the educational environment, and the subject matter. In addition to ten courses in the Department of English, students complete, among others, SED ED 100 Introduction to Education; SED ED 410 Social Context of Education and SED ED 412 Civic Context of Education; SED CT 521 Curriculum and Methods for Middle School (5-9) or SED CT 575 General Methods (5-12); SED EN 506 Curriculum Materials and Teaching Strategies in Secondary English; SED RE 736 Developmental Reading Strategies II; SED SE 251 Special Education and Adolescents; SED DS 502 Introduction to Adolescent Development; and Student Teaching in English. Students are encouraged to complete courses in advanced composition, linguistics, modern English grammar, and adolescent literature.
